So I got a gorgeous Clam from Ronen today, acclimated him, put him in the tank. Just now I noticed a hermit crab eating at something just under the Clam. So I kicked the hermit away and moved the Clam to see what it was...and it was that whole fleshy piece under it, the "foot," I guess. It had fallen off! So...is the Clam doomed??? :eek1: :screama: :frown: Or is this something that can grow back or what????

Thanks Ronen!

If the foot was a little torn it'd be one thing...but it's no longer attached to the clam and a hermit was eating it! I guess we'll see what happens over the next few days and once the lights go on in the morning. :sigh:

The croceas grow on rocks in the wild, and they are either cut or hammered off, often times damaging the foot. Sucks that they don't regrow.

A quick check on the underside before purchasing a clam can reveal if it is in good shape or if there is any damage. A healthy clam shouldn't be bothered by hermits or bristle worms, they're just cleaning up the weakened animal.

my clam fell off its rock the other month and completely severed its foot muscle (you can probably find my old post about it with a search). A huge piece of muscle ripped off- and I thought for sure it was dead.

But... my clam never showed any signs of stress from the incident- and today has reattached itself to the rock and is doing great!

If you have things eating it from where the muscle ripped off though you might be in trouble...
