i have a biocube... the reason why bio balls are considered a reef tank no no is because they build up detritus and then that could release nitrates into the water... i put live rock rubble into my middle chamber and that seems to work well for me!.

While bio balls are not good you need something to hold the beneficial bacteria. Please describe your tank and what you have it in. If you have corals I am assuming that you have a live rock. Live rock at about 1 lb per gallon will become your filter and then rendering bioballs useless. But if you dont have any live rock you need something.

If you goto a LFS you will always usually see bioballs in their setups.
