You are one of the many that probably have a tank so clean, a xenia can't thrive in it. I was able to keep one easily on my old tank which I didn't do an excellent job with water changes. Now on my 20L to which I do water changes weekly, religiously, and I can't keep it for the life of me; shrink & vanish.

Mine actually like very strong light and current. Under weak lighting they turn kind of blue gray and disappear. Under weak current they don't seem to grow quickly. If you find yourself in Queens, I'll gladly give you a free frag so you can try again.

Which Xenias are you referring to. There's the Pom Pom and then there's the Metallic, both have different requirements and alter based on certain conditions. My xenia do GREAT in my tank and I've sold frags to people who said it did well in their tank. I've experimented with frags from my colony in various conditions (my main tank gets a 20% water change every 2-3 months) has a high amount of flow and a huge amount of light. They grow towards the light and flow. My nitrates stay around 5-10 consistently.

I also put them in a situation with 65ppm nitrates and they've been fine with weaker light and less flow. I always tell people it's a hit or miss. What's key is light acclimation and where the xenia came from (IMO). I keep the pink Pom Pom variant (they are my favorite)

Currently as it sits (I've already sold half of them they used to be all over the overflow):
