I have been a member here for quite a while and in the lsat year this board has really been struggling, People are moving on like myself to other Boards. I really liked this board and the people but it seems like its just not there anymore. , no real posts or threads to keep people interested.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the PM messages box is not gone just moved to the top bar on the page. The "board" produces daily original content via the nationally respected blog and ground breaking content via the magazine--something NO OTHER board does beyond Reefs.org. The daily threads are up to the members. When was the last time you posted a thread of interest?

I agree as far as the site itself goes. Being down for half a day once a week. The design is out of 2001. I think the color wheel for the site has been forgotten with the addition of the purple bar at the top. Any thoughts on a vB theme over haul?

But honestly, reef central has a decent thread once a week maybe - same with MR. But like any reef forum, its the same old questions being asked over and over because noone wants to take any extra effort to look up the answer to their questions which 99% of the time has been answered on a weekly basis. Does this drive anyone else crazy?

I do think the admins here are amazing though!

^ i thought so too until i got reprimanded yesterday for a thread that I posted a year ago-lol
as for the site--this is my favorite reefing site. but like stated--at times, its the same questions over and over. im guilty myself of asking the same questions here and there.
as soon as the frag swap comes around-the site should be interesting

personally I think it's alot better now than it was. I'm here a few more years than most of you and I very rarely posted or lurked back then because there wasn't much info or any interesting threads. There is alot more info available now along with more forums...also as mentioned dealing with people locally is a big plus.

Do you think if we move the commonly asked questions to a 'Commonly Asked Questions' or the 'Reef Beginners' forum that would help?

I also would like to suggest that the questions in the 'general forum' get filtered more. Such as people asking about what skimmer to buy and what light will be best for whatever tank setup be moved to that specific forum (EQ forum, Fish Forum). I think this will help the clutter on the main forum.

Thoughts?

No question that the forum is definitely not the same anymore. The "old school" guys are less active but I think it's natural with the progression of life.

Everybody has their own stuff going on. Although, what I have noticed is a lot more people just selling in the market place with out contributing anything in words of advice, etc. in the present or the past.

I guess it depends what you are looking for in a reefing site. For me Reef2reef is an insufferable place that exemplifies pretty much everything I find wrong with the current hobby.

Compared to most of the hobbyist sites out there I think MR looks great and has far more features. As for content I'm going to have to disagree as well, we are privileged to have some of the best and brightest names in the industry mingleing among the regular folk here. Our mods also make the mods at RC look like the Gestapo. I don't know many people (myself included) who haven't come close to suspensions or bans for what wouldn't even be considered an infraction here.

Summer is always slow, people aren't standing in front of their tanks as much and as fall gets here it always starts to pick up.

As for the constant repetition of basic questions, no site is immune to this and as long as people keep joining the hobby it will always be there.

r2r = 1000$ booger sized frag whoring at its finest. Not to be rude but what is the purpose of this thread? If people agree with you why are they here, if people disagree will that change your mind? As for me, MR still has tons of great folks, I'm chatting with Sanjay and Randy as we speak, I know them both through MR, along with plenty of other reefers who contribute a lot to the hobby. It is what you make of it and who you decide to interact with... No one is forcing anyone to stay anywhere, you are free to join reefcentral, reef2reef or any other forum and see how things are there, if you like it, cool, good for you I hope your tank is/stays/will be awesome... that is the point of all of the forums, to advance the hobby. For my time, MR is where I choose to make my online reefaddict forum home. Reefing and MR seems to take a backseat during the warmer months in NYC.

This is the reason why MR and r2r shouldn't be compared to each other. I haven't been on any reef forums for too long but I didn't take me long to realize what James has mentioned.

MR is fine the way it is. Yeah sure people don't bother searching and keep asking the same questions. But it happens in EVERY hobby related forum, not just reefing. I think people complain too much. Just be thankful there is an MR.

MR has people who are trying to be coral hundredaires as well, luckily the nyc metro area (or any metro area save major cities in asia) is unable to sustain the type of hubris necessary to charge what people from all over the country charge for tiny frags at r2r.

Yeah of course. I feel like in other states, people have more money to spend which is why they can sell corals so expensively. in NYC, everything is more expensive compared to non-city states so its like a counter to the higher prices. the money to buy a small house here can buy you a mansion in middle states. (slight exaggeration intended)

richard, that is not exactly what I meant, I think nyc has plenty of money (yes cost of living here sucks) but what I meant is that any "local" forum does not have enough high end reefers with that mentality (mr has plenty of people with "high end" corals but a lot of them keep it under wraps, give away coral to friends, or just sell when they NEED to trim) whereas r2r has reefers who dont have any other people in their area, so they turn to the internet and sell stuff through the mail at prices that are a bit insane imo. reefs.com when it launches other locations besides nyc will end up similar to that but at least it has very high quality content.... big difference from r2r.

i really like thisw site.alot of old school guys have broke down there tanks.most stay on the CHAT and talk amongst themselves because they are tired of the disagreements on whats right and wrong.its a broken record.as for me the only thing that gets me mad is the prices in the F/S threads.i see more and more members selling at peak prices and thats ridiculous.

Oh I see... meh, its just the poor side of me that can't afford recent coral prices that's speaking =P Yes I do agree with you though

How about the mod start a thread asking everyone's input on how the color schemes should be changed? Nothing big like changing big layouts and stuff, just the colors to give us a simple change and perhaps a refreshing "new" look? Most sites that have been on for a while haven't really changed much layout, just the look. After the mods finalize with their results, they implement it slowly and when they have time.

so, to mods and everyone, what say you to this idea?
