My daughters room shares a wall with my 120g reef it has a custom 75g sump/refugium. The skimmer is an Aqua C EV-400. My daughter wants a small tank possibly an anemone and a pair of percula clowns and a few chromis. I'm thinking a 40 gallon acrylic that I will plumb to my existing sump.

This should be a win win in my mind adding more volume to my reef as well as helping to stabilize the new tank. Ig it a good idea or will it be a headache in the long run?

The idea itself isn't bad persay but there is definitely good and bad aspects to it. It would be easier to change water on 1 system than 2,you don't need a second skimmer and it adds more water volume. Now the bad..if any of those fish get a disease or ich let's say then they are all going to get it. My main concern though would be the kid(s) How old is your daughter? How do you plan to keep the sump and plumbing protected? Against contamination, against kids playing, wrestling, kicking balls, throwing stuff playing with pumps in sump, taking out rocks, heaters etc. Heaters could definitely break from not being submerged, burn a child or other objects it was on if dry. Trust me heaters get very hot I have burned myself once or twice thinking it was off and cool. Just breaking down all the different ideas I can think of good and bad. In the end you really just want the safety of your child and your tank.

On a side note two SEPARATE systems is NOT a bad idea. Yes maybe some more electric and another skimmer/filter. BUT if something was to happen to 1 system like if the heater went bad making it cold or creating stray current, something got into it messing up your parameters, and numerous other options that could happen you can always just put your livestock into the other system. One of our vendors here for example had his system all on 1 pump, plumbed together and someone poisoned it and they lost everything. Had they been separate tanks it would have only killed 1 tank.

It really all comes down to what you want to do. Weigh out the options and take them all into consideration.

I would assume that the sump would stay where it is? In the stand of the 120? So there shouldn't be much of a danger there. As far as cross contamination, I think the biggest variable is your daughter. You know her better than us and if you think that she's responsible enough, go right ahead. Just keep in mind, it would take just one "My fish look hungry, let's feed them an entire canister of food," to put both systems in danger.

Bottom line, if you think she's ready, I think aquariums are great for kids for teaching more responsibility. Just a question, how old is she?

Well if we are talking about cutting holes in the wall or lets say a square/rectangle it EXPOSES the sump to the other room. Obviously there has to be some type of protection for it so that was why I expressed my concern. ALSO I forgot to mention a bigger sump would probably be a better idea as well in case of a power outage so you don't have a flood. You will need a stronger pump to run the return for 2 tanks.

Personally with that much water volume I would suggest a 65-75 gal sump minimum. You could possibly do it with less but then there is other factors that become extremely important variables in the equation. Like for instance how much water is required to run your skimmer? Some need very high water levels like mtc's in my experience needed about 8+" to run effectively, where the marineland line can do fine w/ a 4-6" level. How many gallons will you lose from both tanks combined if power goes out. You need to figure that out in terms of sump space and add in how much you need to run your skimmer and hopefully you are not at the tippy top. I run a 40 gallon w/ a 30 sump I like to be safe rather than sorry. My advice is always the bigger sump the better. Sometimes w/ certain tanks or space limitations you can't do it but if you can it's always the best option. A big part of why many people will put a large sump in the basement so it is out of sight, out of the way, easier to work with/in and of course bigger. You might want to think about that idea if you have a basement Scorp.

My daughters not an issue she's 10 now and has been taking care of the freshwater tank in the basement for 2 years now. The other day she asked me if she could have a reef in her room. I said no there is no room her reply was "take out the TV and put it there I watch your tank more than TV"

All the equipment connected to my current sump they would stay where they are. The sump would definitely be big enough as I said its a 75g custom built. The sump is in a cabinet under the current system the plan was get a new mag 7 cut a hole in the wall and run pvc through it then patch it up.

My big issue was as you stated something going wrong in one tank and wiping both out. Im just trying to weigh the positives against the negatives.

Good so far
Less new equipment to buy as most of my current equipment is rated for well over 400g total system would be around 235 actual water volume somewhere around 180.

Stability of the smaller tank more reliable and water quality easier to keep in check.

One stop water changes as my current set up is plumed for almost automatic water changes.

Bad parts

Anything happens to one tank both will be effected

Looks like the scale is tipping in one direction did I miss anything?

If your 10yr old is begging you to take out the TV and put in a reef I say make it happen any way you can. ( I have a 10yr.old as well--with a reef ---and a TV lol). If the plumbing etc. is safe ( and it seems it is) the risk of cross contamination is really not that great if you are as careful as you should be anyway.

+1...besides even with 2 separate systems...odds are, any problem would be with your big reef system, not the little tank with 2 clowns !

I somehow disregarded you said you had a 75 gallon sump, that should be fine..it was 6 am and I did not sleep yet lol. I wasn't trying to discourage you in any way it can certainly work people do it all the time I was just suggesting you take all pros and cons into consideration before you did anything and make a decision based on that analysis. Good luck with whatever you decide and post pics for us to see the progress.
