API test kits

I thought I was dealing with high Nitrates for the past few weeks but apparently my API test kit tubes leak so much when u shake them that it throws off the readings.
I did another test tonight but instead of using the caps and shaking the test tubes i I used a long thin straw to mix everything and it resulted in a lower nitrate reading.

Im hearing that the API test are pretty crappy. I too am seeing odd results with both my Nitrites and Nitrates..

Nitrates will change day to day if you have a healthy bacteria colony. Keep in mind now... you are adding another element to the test and how it affects it would be unclear. Your plastic straw can easily also change the chemical balance of the test water itself.
