Hi all,
I just picked up a 3? purple tang yesterday. I noticed some dark spots on his body after bringing him home. The spots can clearly be seen under moon lighting LEDS. I only dripped acclimate the tang for the quarantine tank and he is the only fish in there.
He started to eat PE mysis shrimp this afternoon and did not touch any of the nori. Below are a few pics/ vids of the tang.

Are those dark spots parasites? Do I need to treat him to get rid of the spots?

Are those spots there all the time or do they come and go? If they come and go, it is possible he has ich and when the parasties come off, they leave a "scar" on the fish. I had tangs with ich before but not a purple tang.

It doesn't look like Black Ich or Spot disease, which is a turbellarian parasite infection. The Black spot should be very fine, little pepper on the fish, those look larger. It stand out on yellow tangs but other tangs do get it, it's just not as easy to see as it is on a yellow fish.

If it's black spot you need to treat it with Formalin baths. The formalin baths should be repeated every three days until there are no signs of infection.

Regal, Mic, Pecan & Marrone. Thanks for replaying.

The spots are still there today. Comparing the pics from yesterday, the number and location of the dark spots have not changed. He has not been scratching. The spots are a lot bigger than pepper size, so I too am not sure if it is Black Ich. The NSLFS (Not So Local Fish Store) where I got the fish from said the tang was probably just stressed. They said if he does not get better in a few days, I can try to use Prazipro to kill off any parasites.

I got some soft corals, hermit crabs, snails & live rocks /sand in the QT. (I know it?s not a typical QT tank.) I might move him from the QT tank to a separate hospital tank (that is not running) prior to treating if he does not get better.
