Soo I'd love to hear from the guys with 200/300/400/500 gal tanks but everyone feel free too post!

Not asking bout coral etc... just want too know the essentials upkeep costs!

Salt
Dosing
Electric
Food
H2o
Lmk if I'm missing something

I estimate that my tank costs about 70$ a month electric (I use LEDs ). $840yr

4 buckets IO salt a year $160
Water Included in my maintenance 0
Kalk $30
Caribsea media $50
Carbon $50
Phosban $100
Mysis/coral food $80

$1310 per year rough estimate worth every penny btw only 75 gal

Reason for question is when I buy a house my dream is too have a 3-400 display tank just wanna see if it's even feasible

My 600 total system is
50$ 1 box of reef salt crystals a month (could probably do half a box though) that's 40 g change weekly

200$ Lipa- or so .5 hp pump, 1500 watts in heaters, 5 pumps for water movement, 270 watts ai LEDs and I need to add two led bars still

I have no idea on food I buy a ton but it's cheap,, .. Now how much do I spend a yr for pleasure? I would say 3 grand easy ugh

For me it's about $100 every two weeks because I buy a ton of two part supplements and etc. (Excluding the electric bill, which is about $150/month for my entire condo.

Im thinking of an alternative such as a kalk reactor or buying bulk cacl and soda ash from brs, hopefully that will diminish the costs.

My salt, food, & rodi filters run about $50 per month, and maybe another $10-$20 for electricity. But, having a breeding pair of mixed clowns helps offset the cost, my tank now makes me money....not much, but im in the black.

Too much!

I have a 175 gallon. My electric bills in the summer for a 1 bedroom apt. are over 600 bucks! I have a metal halide light that has three 400 watt bulbs The chiller is running a lot of the time. That is the big expense. The chemicals, salt, etc pale in comparrson.

$600 a month is crazy!!! Is your place over 2000 sqft?

Mine was $300-$400 in a 1200 sqft energy inefficient apt., which had a washer/dryer and all my laundry was done in house (i had a 120 with 2x 250mh) No way you should be at $600 unless there are things we don't know about.

AJ hit it on the head... wives and spending. Wifey went to the store we (mostly me) shop in to return something small with no receipt. The manager says I can look you up through your rewards card. He then says wow you guys shop here a lot, a few thousand dollar I see. Well dinner talk wasn?t great that night. :)
Anyway I think $70 a month estimate for a 72g with leds is to high too. From what I understand, Con-eds killawatt price change monthly depending on demand in your area. If you break down your bill to how much 1 killawatt cost you, make sure you add in the "delivery fee" per killawatt. If I remember correctly the killawatt cost and the killawatt delivery fee are not together on the bill. To find out what your equipment (or anything in your home) costs you a month you can get a Kill A Watt Appliance Efficiency Monitor for about $20. Plug it into the power strip or each piece individually. Then just take that number and multiple it by your wattage cost. Over the cost of a year, you might find it is cheaper to buy some less wattage equipment. For your future projects estimate you can look up what you interested in buying add up the watts (this is normally found in the specs) and multiple wattage cost

Regarding food cost check this out from KathyC http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/fish/79892-feeding-without-going-broke.html
