Yes, we do beta test the app. There was a very strange bug that did not show up in our testing (we tested on several devices over a few weeks).

The error you pointed out on the day the app was updated was related to a server problem and was resolved within one day.

As an FYI, the update should be ready next week, and just because we made you wait for it, we're including the following in this new release:

Native iPad Support
Landscape Mode
several other features....

So. Apple has again rejected our update, requesting a specific feature to be added. This delays the release another week. I am just as frustrated as everyone else.

Here is the thing. In my day job, the company I work for does security assessments of products and services. They created an application that had some nefarious purposes hidden in the app, and uploaded it to both Apple and Android marketplaces.

Apple took a week to review, and denied the app (and subsequent revisions) based on the functions my coworkers included in the app. It was denied three times in different forms over the course of a month of submissions.

The Android store posted the app within 2 hours and it remained up until we decided to remove it (as some people had actually purchased it).

The summary really is that Apple does a very good job (sometimes too good a job) making sure the apps they sell are free from problems. Google/Android, not so much.
