if you dont have the tools or skills to do basic carpentry, then just buy a stand and canopy other wise you'll spend more on wasted materials and time than you would if you just bought one...they arent complex to make unless you want it to look nice...if the tank is going in a finished room of your house where it should look nice and be functional, buy a stand...otherwise there are plenty of threads on here and Reefcentral with designs and specs...rc has a very comprehensive stand calculator and design thread in the DIY section...

Thanks for the comment. I have access to tools and will have help so thats not a problem. Its just that the brand stands look and feel so cheap. The store wants $220 for the stand and $160 for the canopy. The stand will go in my living room so yes, it has to looks nice. I guess it can add up once you start looking into moldings and such to make it look nice. On the other hand, its so convenient to just buy it and get it over with. Thanks again.

If you want to make a stand on your own them go to Youtube and do a search on fish tank stands. You'll find some very good videos that walk you through the whole process, including what it should cost to complete. After looking at these videos you should get an idea if you can do the project or not. They're not hard to make but you do need to make sure the stand is correct as it's going to be holding up a lot of weight.

A nice strong stand should only run you about $75-$100 and the canopy should be about $50-$75 or so but depending on how fancy you want it the cost could be a lot higher. The thing is that you can make the stand and canopy to your own specs, height, doors, accessibility and such, not to mention you can make the stand a lot stronger than what you'll find at a LFS or On-Line.

I agree with this. Make your stand higher then your normal stands from LFS like that you have alot of space hieght wise for skimmer and growth light
