I am a guilty culprit of using tap water and I must say "lesson learned". For months, everything seemed fine until the introduction of a yellow tang I bought from a local fish store. Symptoms I noticed initially was that my yellow tang displayed tiny cotton like particles on his body which I thought was some sort of ich. Then he seemed to have recovered when the particles disappeared. A week later I noticed red spots all over his body which I cross referenced while researching the condition as internal bacterial infection. During this period, the fish died. For the most part, my parameters were on point as it pertained to Cal/Mag/Alk. My corals looked good and all the other fish like my chromis, clowns, wrasse, algae Benny, Niger trigger, and etc were doing fine. I added a blonde naso, (3) anthias, power blue tang, and a Red Sea Desjardini Sailfin tang. Not added all at once but were added one at a time every two weeks. All the tangs became sick perished. For some odd reason (at the time), they just all stopped eating. I remember vaguely on New Year's Eve coming home seeing my blonde naso tang attached to my power head and one of my anthias laying dead on the sand bed. A great emotion of panic hit me upon the moment of sight. I felt as if a family member had died. I called up my boy RKaragozler and expressed to him my concern and as a true hobbyist that he is, he told me to test ammonia, nitrate, cal, mag, and Alk. My mag was really low. I instantly did a water change to help replenish my water. Everything seemed fine once again and as a gift I guess to cheer me up, my buddy RKaragozler gave me one of his beautiful yellow tangs. The fish started showing signs of internal bacterial infection about a week later (red all over body) and the tang stopped eating. So one day I called up my boy FathomLed and inquired if he has ever had this issue before and he simply said, "Bro, something may be wrong with your water!" Fathomled told me to stop by his house because at the time he was upgrading my lighting system as well as my controller and he gave me (2) small boxes for a company that would test a small sample of my water and call me with the results.

Yesterday 2/13/2013 at approx. 4pm I received a call in regards to the results of my water. I was told that they only tested TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and the ideal range for water as it pertains to TDS ranged from 1-10. My TDS was 81! I went on to explain that I used the water in my fish tank as well as for my hot beverages that I drink and I was informed that the water quality is so bad that even if I boiled it and drank it, it would be bad for even me to drink much less my fish tank.

FathomLed graciously filled up 22.5 Gallons of R/O water in 4.4 Gallon Jugs and sent me on my way.

I am just passing on my experience hoping that another newbie like me don't make the same mistake.

I am going to invest in some sort of water filtration for drinking purposes. And from now on I will only use R/O in my fish tank.

Dubs, thank you for the gracious comment. Short cuts cost more. Sometimes you look at guys on tv (not saying any names) and you think you can get away with it too. I definitely received a lot of knowledge from this experience.

Thanks, where in Nassau County do you live. I actually never drink tap water, and I am glad I don't. However, I have always used water in my 13 year old reef tank with no ill effects. I do realize the benefits of RO water and plan to do so one of these days, maybe your post will force the issue. I know this is going to sound like non sense to some on this forum, but I sometimes I feel RO water is too clean....

I think there are a lot of us that can contest that we tried skimping out on utilizing some tap water to end badly. Even those who moved from fresh water to saltwater using dechlorination thinking it was a solution.

Even TDS from RO/DI that starts going to 001-004 can turn bad pretty quickly as well. You will start seeing hair algae etc.

Change your filters!!

Typhoon III from Air Water & Ice is very nice as well. You can use it for drinking and fish. we have a big water dispenser/jug in the fridge that I always refill with my ro (it tastes great btw). I have a TDS meter and the water from my brother's water dispenser (poland spring) measures 20something, while my water tests 0.

I would suggest this, it is what I have and has been good to me. Installed it under the sink and use it for my reef plus I always have nice clean water to drink.

Very nice write up, hope that any newbiee sees this and does the right thing.
As far as TDS my outout from my pipes are 150. after going thru 9 stages I manage to get them down to 0. But please also keep in mind that I do flush the system everytime I make water for about 5 minutes, and make 80 gallons at one time. and once a week.
I think their is more to whats in our water that may affect our tanks, other than TDS.

whatever unit you get, a pressurized tank for the RO water is super helpful (comes with a faucet and everything, easy install if you can drill your sink) The cheapest option i found is in that first link.

I wouldnt bother checking just get yourself a rodi with a pressure gauge, dual i line tds meter and a flush kit

+1, if you are not using RO/DI you are just adding up unseen problems.
There is a reason all long term successful reefers use them. There are tons of people who try to skip out on this most important step and then either quit or finally get one after they have leeched phosphates and other junk into their rocks for years.

RODI is the only way to be sure you know what is going into your tank.
You should also be concerned what you are drinking. But you should not drink RODI. RO is fine but DI will have bad consequences in the long run. You dont need to filter water to that level for drinking.
I have a whole house filter from Lowes, costs a couple hundred, and use a charcoal filter for everything.

Do you know why RODI is not recommended for drinking? Is it because DI resin can enter the filtered water?

Buy this:

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-add-on-faucet-kit.html

I use this for drinking water. I have it coming off of my RO. For $75 it's a steal. And NYC water is gross only because the pipes are 200 years old.

This is what is included in the link I posted, I believe it is a 5 stage RODI with this included for under $200. For anyone who already has a RODI but wants drinking water too, this is definitely worth it.
