how do i keep my surface water clean

water wateris pretty much crystal clear except the surface when i look at in from the bottom theres alot of dust and particles there

Are you running your tank with an external overflow to a sump below? Or, are you running a hang on back skimmer? What type of skimmer, filtration, plumbing design do you have?

U have to increase your surface flow and perhaps aim your return stems up a bit to cause a good surface agitation , this also helps increse gas exchange as well.

Point a powerhead towards the top and increase flow. Are you using a skimmer? I had the same issue in my pico. HOB filter and powerhead pointed towards the top helped.

I used to get that when I was running GFO it was a brown film. +1 on facing a power head at the surface to move surface water around.

Definitely agree with the powerhead, but my question comes from plumbing functionality. What type of overflow do you have? A picture would be worth a 1000 words. Technically, the water should flow off the surface and a powerhead really shouldn't be needed (other than to increase the surface agitation more than what you've got). Again, a picture would help.

Have you cleaned out the 'teeth' on the overflow? Since those are on the waterline they should really be taking all the surface scum out of the display. If you could remove the elbow on the return you could direct the return flow straight out and it should help to cause the flow to carry the surface oils/scum over the teeth.

Russ gave you good advice about the elbow. What size return pump do you have? Try and keep your hands out of the tank as much as possible because this doesn't help the oily film.
