I live in NYC and temperature has always been an issue in my apartment during the summer months. I bought a 1/2 HP chiller, which runs almost constantly during the summer. Because I can't vent the exhaust, it blows into the living room and fights against the air conditioners, resulting in huge electric bills and an apartment that never is cool (just ask my complaining wife).

I used to run Metal Halide lights, but switched to LEDs to help reduce the heat. I still would like to find additional ways to reduce the tank temperature without the need of the chiller running non-stop. I have a good skimmer in the sump and obviously water comes down the overflow boxes and into the PVC into the sump (creating lots of water movement).

I have glass tops on the tank. Several posts recommend taking off the tops because it will reduce temperature. But, because I am running LEDs instead of metal halides, and thus creating less heat, will removing the glass tops reduce the temperature even further? Also, I worry about salt building up on my very expensive LED lights and damaging them.

I would greatly welcome everyone's thoughts on this topic!

Take the tops off.
It allows for better oxygenation and lets the heat out.
Your tank will run cooler with LEDs but there are still pumps creating heat in the water.
One of the drawbacks of taking the tops off is evaporation.
If you top off manually its another chore.
The tank will run much cooler without the tops.

But I don't think oxygenation is a concern in my system. I have two overflow boxes and a powerful skimmer. Temperature is the big issue.

I am really worried about the salt damaging the light. I have the light about 3-4 inches off the tank. Has anyone had problems. Unfortunately, I can't raise the light higher the way everything is set up.

I am running a Blueline 100 external pump. Does anyone have thoughts on whether this pump is adding a lot of extra heat to the tank? If so, are there better external pumps that are QUIET and don't add too much heat?
