I am going to be setting up a deep blue 80 gallon frag tank which will have softies,Lps and Sps. Should I go with 1 27" model or 2 20.5" models. I can hang the 27" fixture high for more light coverge but I'm wondering if it will be enough light to be capable of growing Sps. Any thoughts or experience appreciated. Thank you

What are the measurements of that tank?

I have 2 of the 27" 160w over my 5 foot. It's a ton of light, in a good way. I'd rather have more, driven a little lower, than not enough.

Don't be bashful about asking CoralVue directly. They will answer you honestly. There's are several Maxspect threads you can search through as well where literally dozens of people ask similar questions.

I think on a 48" tank they generally answer with either direction. If you go with 2x 20", you might have a bit more coverage. 1x 27" would give you some slightly lower light at the extremes of the tank, which might be fine if you want to grow out some lower light frags there.

I run a long photo period because I'm insane, but a shorter portion of it is max power. I basically have a very long ramp up and down. Actually, I take that back. I ramp up fast, then even out for the peak of the day, then slow ramp down so I can actually see the tank at night after work and because I'm a night owl. But the peak light, especially the white channel (A), is normal ish, I think.

A B
09:00 -- 0 1
12:00 -- 50 85
15:00 -- 70 99
19:00 -- 60 95
23:00 -- 30 90
03:00 -- 0 1

I'm not entirely sure this is ideal or even close to it. I'm still experimenting. Don't try this at home :) I might come up a little higher on the A (white) channel some more in a few weeks, but only at 15:00, IE the peak. I won't go higher than 60 at 19:00, in fact I'm considering lowering that time point a little. I have to see how my acroporas react.

FWIW, I've found these lights to be REALLY powerful. I've already bleached out one SPS. If you are right under one of the pads, yeah, lots of lumens. I have lots of SPS from the middle of my tank and up (it's 26" high one). Lights are hanging 6" off the surface.

Definitely interested in what you are running.

Yeah man. Those CREE XP-E's and XT-E's they are running are no joke. The key is a slow acclimation...you can probably run them at full gas, but you'd have to acclimate over a period of months. That's what I'm doing.

Hi. I'm a lurker on this forum - but I'm ready to buy some good LEDs for my 90g. I hate my WavePoint, I have simple softies.

You guys recommending this model/brand? Tnx.

What are the measurements of your tank?

If you're just keeping soft corals, most of the brand name fixtures will do. (I don't advocate the no name eBay stuff, ever) If you think you might want to branch into SPS or clams or whatever, you might get a better, full spectrum fixture. You could also DIY, but that's a lot of work and you have to be good with a soldering iron and extremely patient. :lol_large

I really do like the Maxspect Razors though. They are full spectrum, which I could ramble on about being the key for days and put out a metric Wookie ton of light. The Razors aren't horrendously ugly over your tank either. CoralVue's support is also excellent.

I debated several LED fixtures for my new tank in January. It came down to the Razors, the Radion Pro's or DIY. The Radion Pro's are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive for what you are getting. DIY would have been my preference but it was going to be too much work and mess on my dining room table for weeks while I built it. And making it look good would have been more work.

Sorry, I'm rambling, yeah, the Razor is a good fixture :) You can't go wrong.

i dont know if anybody will still find this thread useful or not but i would like to comment/ask some questions to its users...

i have been running them for about 4 months.
they are great lights, but way to strong.

i was running whites at 70% and nearly lost all my sps (yes i ramp up slowly)

im down to 45% on whites tops...

has anyone had the same problems?

thanks

Well the beauty of these lights is that you can play with the amount of light you want.... Is really up to you, you know your stock better than anyone else, take the lights for a test drive ;) go ahead try different settings, different times. See what works for you.

That's what I have been doing. However I have killed some very nice sps I had... And I have check my water parameters and all and nothing is out of whack. I'm going to have someone that has a PAR meter come by to check the intensity. He is very knowledgeable and had trying LEDs himself and found that most of the time 25% to 50% was more light than most corals need.
