Not sure about all you guys using fans....if you have an sps tank like myself I wouldn't even think about running my tank without a chiller or an a/c in the same room.if you have mostly softies its understandable

I got sps and Lps and no filtration what so ever I'm starting to realize this hobby is just about WC and that's it unless you have a huge tank.

If I keep my fan off for more than 12 hrs my temp will rise easily to 83.5 though so I should get an extra fan to be safe

Chiller AC and fan here. redundancy is a good thing.

+1 ... If I could afford it. I like to use the minimum amount of equipment. Not really by choice. Better be safe than sorry I hear you though

Your underestimating how much corals can handle. And it's not to each his own. It's anothe case of products being overpriced and out of reach for most casual reefers who end up getting by w cheaper alternatives, IMO

What if you have a fowlr? Are the temperature thresholds different?

I think it all depends on the type of fish. Like some are colder water species and some are also more sensitive to changes.

Is this coming from a marine biologist?
Entire reef systems are collapsing in the ocean because of changes so subtle they are difficult to detect.

Not a marine biologist, but just from reading a lot about saltwater keeping in general and the consensus seems to be that a fluctuation of 2 degrees within 24 hours is fine, more than that and it can be dangerous. However I also read and experienced for about a year that I'd your tank is constantly fluctuating a lot like 3 degrees for example, your coral (maybe fish too) get used to this and become more tolerant of this. Versus a really steady tank at like fluctuation of barely 1 degree and suddenly it goes up or down too much, this can cause stress or worse I read.

2 weeks in the hobby he has it all figured out with equipment, temps and cheap flow. Good for you

Who? Nobody has It all figured out that's part of the fun is learning about these things to me. But I do use minimal equipment if you must know so far so good. Eventually when I get $$ ill get all the controllers and maybe a bio pellet reactor for my never ending nitrate battle.

There is no way I would run a tank with MH and SPS without a chiller. I can get away with LEDs, a sump fan, and an AC in the room, but there are still ~2 degree temp swings sometimes unless the AC is on at all times (it isn't).

I think it would be extremely difficult for me to keep SPS without a controller on top of this all too. Evaporation, temp swings... miss one of these from a late night out or so, and watch your favorite piece start with RTN.

Its a tough, expensive, but rewarding hobby/lifestyle.

I changed my lighting schedule around. Instead of going on at 1 o'clock in the summer I start them at 7 o'clock pm. Also run my a/c for 4 hours a day in the afternoon. Pretty steady around 82 degrees
