Personally I think your better off with live sand. It's easier on your clean up crew when they burrow. Starfish, gobies,wrasse,bennies they all prefer sand. Crush coral is to coarse and it's been known to trap,debris therefore causing your levels to rise and be out of whack

Awe you gotta have some sort of substrate if your mimicking the ocean. What ocean you know with no sand or crushed coral bed except our fish tanks? Completely understandable why your going with no sand

CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade. I accidently ordered the Super Reef sand by them which is a mix of Special Grade and crushed corals. Its actually not too bad. I do have two big bags left over if you are interested. Most people in my search I found liked Special Grade or Tropic Eden Reeflakes.
