i think the smaller the carbon the better. increased surface area will give the carbon more room to bind with whatever you're trying to suck out of the water. it'll increase efficiency

do a phosphate test with a piece of carbon in the vial. Size means nothing. It's if the carbon leaches nutrients or not. If PO4 shows higher with a grain of carbon than it does without.... it's bad carbon. Same... good carbon... less... get the rest of us the name of that carbon.
ESV and Black Diamond are reliable carbon.

i always use hydrocarbon from 2 little fishes. but i'm sure there r other good ones too. however flow rate for carbon is much higher in phosban reactor than for phosban media.
