I'm am confused on how to select the right skimmer. How the heck you know if the lph, the pump size gph, neck size, cone or none cone is right for me. How do you know if a skimmer is too small or too big for a set up. I have read that sometimes getting a skimmer too big is not always better. And I read if a skimmer is too small it will be working too much.
I currently have a seaside aquatics es5 on my 75 reef with 20 gal sump. Heavy bioload. Is this skimmer good or do j need a bigger one. How big? The es5 has a neck size of 6" and lph 300
Any info would be appreciated.

"for me" that's not a heavy bio-load on a 75G
but if you looking to buy a skimmer usually in "more information" you will see the bio-load guide like:

300G Low / 200G medium bio-load / 125G heavy bio-load

now I don't know what is a "heavy bio-load" for the manufacturer
for me a heavy bio-load is like 50 fish on a 75G packed with corals and 5 to 10 inverts

ill make it short, manufactures generally way over rate their skimmers. ive had around 30 skimmers from about every manufacture that's worth talking about almost all of my systems have been 60-80g, hands down best 2 skimmers ive used for a tank that size was my vertex in100 with a atb 840 pump, a atb 840, ive used alot that were to big, yes a skimmer can be too much for a system, I love the skimz line but beta's one that was a little on the large side for my tank. the one your using seems a little on small side pump wise. neck shouldn't be no were near 6" for a pump pulling that little lph. btw 3 tangs to me is too much for a 75g system, I don't base heavy load by the amount of fish compared to the type of fish, 1 tang will poop more then 3 wrasse's

You generally want a skimmer with a good pump that has made a name for itself in many homes , size doesn't always mean a greater skimmer , I have seen small skimmers that take on large tanks because the pump will handle that water volume , it all depends on what your looking for , what your expecting , your budget, and your sump space , I would gladly help you if you need help choosing a good skimmer, shoot me a pm and I will help you out.
