Went to buy some livestock at a lfs I frequent and the guy tells me that he had the wrasse I was looking for outback but I couldn't have it because it was in qt and that I had to wait 3 days ........cute sales gimmick , made me really assume I was being taken care of..........that was a lot of bull because I went back to get my wrasse 3 days later and I went in 2 hrs earlier than I said I would and I just happened to catch this lfs unloading a shipment that had arrived earlier and , not only did he try to trick me with the fish , I saw him putting livestock into the sale tanks without dipping anything or examining his corals and larger pieces for pests or parasites that may infect and cost you thousands in ruined livestock.

I asked the owner if he intended to check his stock better , and his reply was , I can't check everything in the store and that he only bought his coral from a very distinct and healthy well known dealer ! .......what exactly does that mean!? Now I was so aggravated and then his co- worker sent me over the edge .....he totally took the wrasse in question out of the box being real quick with his hands , he goes out back and a few minutes later presents me with the same shipping bag ! The fish obviously had poop all in the bag and it even had the metal staple that most shippers use to seal the bag!!!

So I guess my fish never existed ! It was the busted up looking wrasse that had just arrived !

So the end result .........I said a few choice words and I walked out with my money intact ......poor wrasse probably died by now.

How do you know if a store checks the livestock! ? Is it even worth the risk!

What is this hobby coming to!?

Sux, probly not all that uncommon. I'm sure you will never be back in the store: lfs slowly lose customers with this type of interaction. (Or similar) It's no wonder many just go to trusted online dealers they have had success with.

I never bought a qt fish before. I look for a specimen with clear skin, good color, and eating aggressively. I also make sure there is NO aggression in my tank, and I keep all my fish very fat. This has worked out for me for the last 10 years so I wouldn't say that it's luck. Saltwaterinbrooklyn, look past all the $hit and the fish or coral will speak for itself, as you have already observed.

Maybe you should share so we don't make the mistake of buying there

I'm more sharing my experiance than the shops name only because it then goes into a slandering thread and those that live near or swear by the lfs start a huge battle on the thread , I'm sure you have seen it many times before , you have been around long enough brotha to know how it works.

Not many you can trust. I bought a "quarantined" fish a few years ago from a small store near me.
Well, that fish had velvet. Ended up losing all my fish. Was an expensive and time consuming lesson.

Stopped into a Petland last night and asked how much this very large hermit was (previously I checked all the price tags and the most expensive hermit was $5) he looked at the hermit then looked at the tags and said its $10. I said OK what kind of hermit is this and where's the tag. His response I don't know what kind of hermit. So then I responded but you know its $10 huh? Dumb stare.
