From what I have found online, these seem like a pretty decent addition to some tanks when set up properly. Has anyone here ever tried implementing one or currently uses one??

Also curious if there is any reason one shouldn't use one perhaps the bucket turning into a nutrient sink.

i run a RDSB which is also my fuge (50G brute with about 8" sandbed), i dont have any issues with it at all. And keep in mind i used "used" sand not brand new, and my trates and P04 are practically non-existant. My tank has been running for about a year and 3 months

Yes initially I was reading on the some 80 page thread about it from reef central that goes back to like 2006. From the bits and pieces that don't get too technical, it sounded like they were running a 5g bucket filled most of the way, with 2 bulkheads drilled 2" from the top. Many stated to use clean sand but some said to seed it with established. High flow rates and that the water being fed to the bucket should have at least passed through a filter sock. Blackout conditions with a cover on it to minimize light getting to the sand.
