A couple of thoughts:
I dont think Discover Scuba is an option for you to collect anything. You would be diving with a DiveMaster and others who will typically say "Leave only bubbles, take only pictures." In addition, you will have your hands full coping with scuba issues if you are not experienced.
If you snorkel, know where you will be as collecting is prohibited in all Marine Reserves.
Know what species you are after. Many are now protected.
What do you need to collect underwater? Bags/tools/gloves(watch out for toxins/spines/bristle worms/fire coral)
How will you get specimens from shore to your room? will they survive?
How will you get specimens on plane? any checked bags will be in the hold for 4+ hours at temperatures well below zero
Considering how obsessive many of us are in acclimating corals and inverts, what kinds of specimens might survive under these handling conditions?
