Hi Reefers!

My family and I plan to move to Maryland in early June - I just received news about a job offer this past week! We have a 90 gallon ELOS fish tank with tons of coral and a few fish. We have not found a home yet in Maryland - it may be a while before we find something permanent so we may have to stay with family in the meantime.

My question is: What options are there for people who need to move and who want to keep their fish tank? Would an aquarium store be able to hold corals for short period of time? Do people just sell the whole tank and start over? We are worried about our tank and feel like the only option would be to get rid of everything, unfortunately.

A photo of our tank has been attached. Your advice, opinions, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated!

~ Wilmina

IMO I would keep the hardware and sell everything else and then start over. Unless you have found somewhere to live already then I would take the drive and set up same day with tones of buckets with sealed lids.

Having other people care for your coral is too much of a problem. I would find the fish a good home with a good reef keeper, no rookies... lol

A lot depends on how long it's going to be before you reset the tank back up. If it's going to be months, then it's better to sell the corals and fish now and keep the tank and equipment, especially since the tank that you have is on the expensive side. You could also let friends hold the corals for you, until you're ready to set the tank back up. You could also sell everything and then buy a new tank and equipment, that way you can get a better setup, or different tank, than what you currently have.

if your not going to set it up right away, then i would sell the fish and coral. wash and dry the rock and sand. you can use it all when you set it up and seed it with a piece of rock or sand from an established tank, and let it cycle.
then you only need to buy live stock.

When I moved I ended up buying and setting up a Rubbermaid stock tank. Filled it half way with new water then moved all my water from my tank plus the coral &a fish to the stock tank. That way I could take my time moving the tank to the new house setting it up and cycling before moving rock, coral, and fish.. But like everyone else is saying it all depends on how long you will need to hold the stuff between seting up.
Here is a pic of the stock tank set up

Beautiful tank!
IMO, you should sell me everything at a discounted price so as not to bother with the headache of having to transport or store, or pay someone to tank sit, or move a tank into relatives home.
And when you are finally settled in your new home (which can take weeks or months), you can upgrade to a bigger, better tank. Start fresh and do things that you wished you had thought to do based on lessons learned from the last build.

Disclaimer : I do not know this person ( oh207 )

I would have to agree with this member, and everything he stated.
You want to move to your new location stress free and not have to worry about the tank and livestock. Moving from one state to another is stressful enough. When you do settle in,
( how ever long that will take ) you can finally sit back and plan your new build.
New rock/aqua design, new lighting, new skimmer etc...

Good luck, hope everything goes well for you and you family.
