You forgot to mention how well they stay away when you are trying to catch them..
I've been trying all sorts of method to catch 2 of my fish. All the other fish will go into any trap I set except the two that I want. They'll lurk around and get the food the others drop, but they won't go in.

11 days and 5 fish... not much of a study. This is why people are misinformed about so many things... they'll publish anything. Fish can not reason... they can only 'learn' through instinct and conditioning.

Research....HA!

They talk about this concept as if it were a totally new discovery...IMO any animal that live in a social group (pack, gaggle, school) will exhibit a stratification of dominance with in the group (ie. the Alpha, Omega and everthing in between). Futhermore, the Omega may not have ever challenged the middle animal but is kept in line (as the omega) by the Alpha and the others in the group...

I highly disagree that this should be considered "Reasoning." I do agree that fish are not mindless, and have experienced myself how "clever" (if I may use the term loosely) they can be...especially when if comes to "begging" for food or avoiding fish traps. But I think that these are more of a combination of instinct and learned survival behavoirs! IMHO!!

11 days research = grain of sand. :grumpy:
