Hey Mr!
I've been having a pretty bad dino issue for the past month. While I was away for a week on vacation it seemed to get much worse. I've been losing a few snails, and I believe my tang died from eating it. It's also smothering a few of the corals I have on my sandbed. Not to mention its an eyesore :( What can I do to get rid of them, Im tired of this.

You sure its dinos?

Theres a recent thread of someone battling them also...check that out there are some things people tried and how it worked out.

Id suggest water changes...how olds the tank? What are some of the specifics?

I added some pictures. I've been sitting at 0 nitrate and phosphates for a while. ( I feed lightly) When most of my green algae died dinos started showing up. It covers an area of the sandbed and then develops stringy strands. It had bubbles in it after it's sat there for a while. Some of the areas of dino disappear at night.

Dose No3. - po4(if needed)

Keep cleaning it out.
Don't change the water.

Let hair algae grow for a bit and take over to out compete. Then add a big cuc, and keep cleaning. I grew a ton of GHA, long and nasty. Didnt clean the glass for a month, siphon it out into the filter socks and clean them out. I did take out 3/4 sand to minimize the cyano.

After the other algaes took control and no more signs of dino, I did massive w/c's,
Dosed Fluconazole, (followed instructions). It took about 3 months to be free of all.
Keep skimmer running, need help with oxygen.

A little cyano should appear as well, deal with it later.

You are runnung to low nutrients, dino loves that condition, as nothing will out compete it.

I just went through it, very bad, after a fish loss / velvet outbreak. Nutrients bottom out. There is a great thread on another site that deals with it. now added a cryptic zone to my fuge, and natrural algae control, like reactor or scrubber.

You should also identify the species, they vary slightly for eradication.

Ill throw up before and after pics in a bit.

Will over-feeding help me raise nitrates and phosphates?
I'm about to do a 5 gallon waterchange so I can siphon in off the sand. I have a refugium, but the chaeto isn't going very well. Thanks for the info

I'd keep the water, just filter out the cyano / dino.
Seachem nitrogen and phosphorus are going to be your friends for a bit, you want to elevate the levels to scary.

Chaeto isnt growing due to lack of nutrients, youll need that after all this is clear and the algaes are gone.

I?m battling them and I?ve broken down and decided after doing everything and I mean everything just short of installing a UV or doing some kind of algae reactor to compete with the Dino that I will be starting over , cleaning house basically - that and ich wiped everything but my shrimps and cleanup crew (they don?t eat the red string bubble stuff ) ..

Anyway Dino X proved to do nothing although I didn?t stick to the 21 day dosing schedule I?m at 9 I think but within a couple of hours after blackout which is the only way to even try and start a battle against it , it always comes back -

Here is what I?ve tried
1. Dino X treatment
2. Running skimmer on high and keeping clean daily to pull water and whatever junk
3. Siphoning and filtering through filter sock 3x over
4. Cleanup crew
5. Chemi pure weekly
6. Carbon weekly
7. Full week blackouts
8. NO3 PO4 X algae management treatment
9. Minor water change
10. Weekly top offs of RODI water from a new system
11. Enduring fish that die don?t breakdown in tank
12. Temp maintaining 78
13. Light schedule 8-10 hrs brand new bulbs when trying to see if it will come back
14. Maintaining good flow on both sides of tank and surface
15. Weekly water testing (always perfect)
16. Poly pad in skimmer bay and filter area
17. Etc.....

#1 Remove all the snails, they will die , after snails die they release some toxins in water which is FUEL for Dino.
#2 Increase PH ( using Kalka) go up slow up to 8.4-8.5 stay up list 2 weeks.
#3 Skim wet, clean every 2 days the cup.
# 4 NO water change, least 30 to 45 days.
#5 You must have PO4 0.03 ppm to 0.06 , Nitrate 3 to 5 ppm , what i mean Zero PO4 or Nitrate NO good.
#6 First week will be good to use 100 micron sucks, wash every day (or change)

Do NOT celebrate after few weeks, easy to coming back.

A few questions:
Where should I relocate the snails too? Is the refugium safe?

Won't dosing kalk also spike my alk, cal, and mag?

Thanks for all the info btw

Yes, will spike Alk, Ca, you have to balance , give up in some you add.
I will give up on snails , donate to LFS , NO place in your system for snails until You 110% NO more Dino.
The most important , when dose Kalka make sure is ONLY clear water , you may check Youtub for that or net how.

Different things work for different tanks. I lost a lot of coral trying different methods including peroxide dosing. Nothing worked until I bought Dino X as a last resort. Followed instructions to the letter and Dino was wiped out and never came back. I still have the bottle I bought with some left and never had to use it again.

But make sure you follow the instructions, can?t stress that enough.
