I feed a "dixie cup" of live brine and their water to the reef everynight. Got distracted and placed the cup still full of brine on top of the tank, 6" away from my 400W MH which was off at the time. Forgot to feed them to the tank. Came home from work the next evening after the lights had been on for 5 hours. The SO had the basement door closed and said "something has died in the basement". The brine had cooked. Forget skimmer scum and xenia breath, 6 days later I was still airing out and deodorizing
One day we had company over and I was showing them the tank and I was so embarrassed as there was this awful smell from the tank. Then I realized it was grandpa!
About 10 years ago, I had a 3 lb. anemone that I got at my LFS (sebae I think). It flourished in my tank, until I took a 2 day trip, and my roomate "took care" of my tank. Not sure what he did, but I came back to a dead anemone and almost everything else in the tank was gone too. I had to lift the jelly mass of the anemone out of the tank to dispose of it. When that thing hit the air, I thought I was going to die. I've never smelled anything so foul.
Someone I know was curing live rock. Little did I know they were doing 90lbs in a 40 gal. We met up after a hot day a went over to his place. Went we went in we found the powerhead that had been circulating the tank had gotten clogged and the tang had stagnated through the day. The water was black... ugghhh it was the most disgusting thing i had ever smelled. The temperature was about 90 in the place too
