It depends where you live. Some sand is polluted and not recommended. If you live in Hawaii, San Diego or the Bahamas, it's probably all right though. I wouldn't think ocean sand from say...Maine would have the same critters as those from the Carribean and would probably die off. If you are looking for clean dry sand, maybe you could just wash it off and use it though as a regular substrate.
