In my sump sits the accused. One emerald crab named Ernie. Charged with nippery and resisting arrest. He's challenging the eye witnesses. Says the colony is all related, can't be objective. Mistaken identity. Can't see anything clearly under actinics. Now he wants character witnesses from the board.

But I tell you folks. I saw him do it myself. Blatant tissue mastication of a poor defenseless sps frag. Months and months of molts have hardened him. I can tell he feels no remorse. Don't let anyone tell you his kind don't nip polyps. It's nature over nurture. You provide a good home, feed them well, but they still go bad.

Yeah but the sumps are so crowded these days, the crabs seems to be back on the reefs within months...

I think we reefpayers should stop feeding these crabs & let them find productive activities for a change!

Better yet, send them back to the reef that they came from! If they can't follow our rules, then they need to go live somewhere else!

Crabs will be crabs...

I find it kind of shocking all the crabs people keep when the experts (i.e. Shimek) tell us that all crabs are opportunistic predators (including our beloved hermits!)

We need to spend more on education and rehabilitation. More sumps is not the answer people! The second you finishing building a sump it's already filled to capacity with characters questionable. Case in point is our own sump here at reefs.org.

Some of you may say that you can't teach an old crab new tricks, but they just haven't tried hard enough. Imagine the self satisfaction you'd have knowing that you'd made a difference and brought a wayward crab back to the straight and narrow path.

Don't be too hasty in fattening that crab for the pot!

The next step in reef keeping is going to be to allow for some amount of predation. Now that things are getting to the point that corals are relatively easy to grow, you have to prune them anyway. Coral nipping fish, crabs and similar unscrutable characters are going to come into vogue to help complete the ecological cycle, mark my words.

Course, we could also setup a 'free Ernie' fund. Build a pen in Florida off the keys where he can be rehabilitated and perhaps reintroduced into the wild. Anyone live in Florida?

Sending them to the sump ins't the answer. They will just find more crabs like themselves who have taken a nip here or there and form gangs. There is strength in numbers. I mean really, it is societies fault after all. His parents probably split on him early or were just a couple of cakes. It is the deviled in him that made him do it. Any way once the gang is together, no sump will hold them, and the corals, well, for them it is only a matter of time.

You may notice that on the posts that Cheese has that {} the original post dates are from several months ago. It would seem cheese is digging in the archives and bumbing many of the heated posts and some that are of intrest to himself to the surface for another run with many members who where not here when they originally were discussed. If cheese wants to root around in the archives, hey you got get your kicks somehow on a friday night

I think its an excellent idea. you never know who has some excellent input to add, but somehow missed the topic, and if it interests you further, why not? I may, time permitting, pull a "Cheese Sandwich" or two myself.

I wouldn't recommend it - it seems to bring forth hostility.

You know, my family and I moved out to the suburbs just so we could raise our kids away from crabs, and now this.
