So how are you guys doing without a skimmer and sump? The reason I ask is that I just had a moving disaster, and what is left of my 92 gallon reef is now in a 50 gallon with no skimmer or sump. It's been a month and all is well.

just curious, skimmerless people, what is it in you tank that keeps the film of protein from gathering on the water surface?

I've never had that problem in ANY marine tank, even with the old school undergravel filter, fish only tanks years ago.

My tank has built-in overflow. But even though, I do not see oil/protein film in the sump either.

There seems to be too much water movement for a film but I have no skimmer. I do use an overflow on my 55 gal. to a sump and then refugium with cal.... (sorry CA residence).

Tim, It's OK, I have changed all my caulerpa to Caulerpa prolifera, which is not on the list of 9 banned species.

Glad that I am not living in San Diego County........hehehe.....

No skimmer for 4 months now, and the pump on my sump quit almost 2 months ago. Had a battle with the cyano and brown algae for a bit, but the tank has been balanced for a while now. TONS of life appearing since I removed 9 (yes, 9!) fish from the reef. Only a pair of percs in a 75G now...

I'm still trying to set up a 20G long side-by-side refugium, hopefully soon, simply because I love to watch the critters in it...

Peace,

Chip

I don't run a skimmer or sump on either of my two FO tanks. Now I'm not sure what the primary difference in this philosophy is between FO and a reef set up, but with a dsb, ample LR and good circulation, the tanks are thriving and nitrates stay below 30 in the one that's stocked the heaviest, and around 10 in the other. I feed once a day and do 20% water changes every other week though.

I do not use a skimmer and I use a Ecosystem40 hang on back refugium. Tank has been up for just over a year and things are doing good. Coral growth has been great. I have alot of water current so there really isn't any build up on the surface.

I was skimmerless/sumpless for 4 months. Now I have a large sump no skimmer. System has been skimmerless for 11 months.

I tend to get an algae outbreak every few months, even with nutrient export.

I am planning to put a skimmer in the sump soon.

So I can carry a larger bio-load.

Too much work staying skimmerless. IMO
