I finally have the cash to get a new skimmer.

Precision HOT 1 or Aqua-C?

Which is easier to maintain?

Which is cheaper?

I assume you're comparing the HOT-1 to the Remora. I believe the Hot-1 is currently about $10 more, but I would go with it over the Remora if it were me. I have the HOT-1 and like it very much. It is easy to maintain IME. I also think AquaC makes very good skimmers and I use an in-sump EV-90 which I like very much. I would recommend the HOT-1 only because I have used it personally and have been very happy with it and because some of the people whose opinions I respect who have used both seem to prefer the HOT-1. My opinion only.

Both excelent skimmers but in the ease of maintenance i think the remora wins due to the ease of collection cup removal (just lift it off, with the PM you have to un-do some thumb screws) and since the HOT-1 is clear you will have to clean it out more due to algae growth. The Aqua-C is smoked acryllic so you don't have that problem. HTH

Have no personal experience with the PM HOT-1 however I've got extensive experience with the AquaC's and they do not need to be tweaked. Only performance change you can really do is raise the cup for drier foam and lower it for wetter foam. We have found that if algae is building up on the spillway back into the tank that can affect performance and should be kept clear.

I would go with the HOT-1. It provides more contact time and is built a lot better IMO. You can run a drain from the collection cup too. The 18"x3" reaction chamber is much larger than the regular Remora's chamber and 20% larger than the one on the Remora Pro. This translates to better performance.

I have had a Remora Pro for over a year and it has given me a lot of trouble. I have heard from people who have used both the HOT-1 and the Remora series and nearly all of them like the HOT-1 better. I can't afford one right now though.
