Hello,
I need help, please. I have a fist sized hydnophora that has developed small holes about the size of a pin head(about 8-10 holes). The skeleton is visible, as if something were eating it(I have two peppermint shrimp). The coral is under 440W VHO and 200W NO. It is about 14" under the surface. Water chemistry checks out OK; pH, Alk, Calcium, salinity all OK. I suspect lack of sufficient lighting, but I'm not sure. The coral has been in the same spot for about four months now and was growing slowly. I'm not sure what could be causing the holes.

Has anyone ever experienced this type of occurance in their SPS? I am considering fragging to salvage unaffected areas and putting those up high in the tank. Looking for any suggestions/advice.

TIA,
Phil

hi.
For Hydno, it is common, particular if the holes are near the base, where there is shade. Don't panic yet, but keep your eyes on it.

Whew! Thanks for the replys. I have seen no other signs of distress in the Hydno. It still inflates fully, especially at the tips. I'll wait and see. Again, thanks for the reassurance.

From what I understand, Hydnophoras are pretty tough. BUT my caulastrea recently kicked the heck out of my Hydno. There's a huge area of open skeleton on it, and I've moved it out of the Caulastreas's reach. It's still fully inflating (the part of the hydno that's left)
Coral wars are interesting.
Maybe running some carbon would be a good idea.

hi.
Most LPS like "candy cane" and "elegance" can beat up any Hydno. without effort. Keep in mind that Hydno. is probably one of the strongest SPS out there.
