I am looking for any information that I can get about these two antibiotics. I would like to try and evaulate their use in marine aquaria. I know that trimethoprim is a synthetic antibiotic that apparantly is supposed to be effective against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Does anyone here know anything more about these medications? I would like to know what they are effective against (GN and/or GP bacteria), how does pH and water hardness (as in saltwater) effect them? Anything you can tell me about them would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Terry B

In short, I'd forget about it.

Combinations of sulphonamides and trimethoprim (Pirizet, Potesept) were used as a broad-spectrum antibiotic less toxic than sulfonamides, mainly for poultry, but its effectiveness has greatly decreased because of the widespread bacteria resistance (it is still used for coccidiosis and minor infections).

These medications (tablets or powder, there is also a paste form) are short-acting and intended for pH of drinking water.

I haven't had luck with any sulfa based product in marine aquaria, and they can be quite toxic.

Furazone (and relatives) are broad spectrum meds recommended for seawater.
