K, well I went and bought some 1/4" plexiglass and cut it 7 inches high and then drilled some holes in it. I placed it lengthwise across the front of the sump and its about 5 inches wide. I tried to put most of the sand in it. The pump is pretty much free of sand and I put a sponge filter right on the intake. I need to drill more holes I think, but this should hopefully work?

UV Unit? As in a UV Sterilizer?

I may be wrong, but logic would dictate that a UV Sterilizer would kill off some of the goodies that come with a refugium. Microcrustaceans may survive a trip through the impeller, but the UV is pretty deadly.

I had a 55 gal rubbermaid sump/refugium. It had 4in. sandbed. No baffles, but only used an Iwaki 20, as a return. I placed a piece of eggcrate on the sand and sat my Euroreef & Eheim pump on the eggcrate. No problems with that set-up.

I never ran lights, just a deep sandbed. When I ran algae & corals in the sump also, I removed the skimmer.

Yeah I have a euroreef skimmer with a sedra 5000 pump. (don't have the pump yet, as the first one came with a crack and I sent it back and am still waiting for the replacement) Are you saying that I can't have any sand near it??
And Tangirl this is ultra fun!!! can't believe how much time a person can spend...just diddeling with it! Hubby thinks I've lost it (well maybe he always has!!) but when the liverock came in the other day..I got up at 4 a.m. and rearranged that stuff all day!! For your info, I think most of us have already lost it. However, I now believes we are normal and all others seems like nuts by not understanding it.

Yes, make sure no sand can get anywhere near the skimmer pump.
