I bought some new live rock and found a crab that has the same body shape as a large green emerald crab, only this crab is grayish black, and has small bright red dots all over it shell and red eye sockets. Just wondering what type of crab it is and if its reef safe. Don’t have any pics

without a pic it's hard for me to guess but I can tell you that any crab with red, mean looking eyes is usually not reef safe. How large and what shape are the claws?

If you have corals beware. I had a crab hitchhike into my tank with a in a piece of live rock and before I found him he proceded to eat a cauliflower coral I had. Man was I PISSED.

crabs are opportunistic predators. naturally, the larger the claw = the larger the damage they can do. don't risk it, get him out if you can. sorry i can't give you an ID. i have never seen a crab that looks like what you described. FWIW i have a strawberry red colored crab in my reef that has the same shape as the emerald, he has black elbow joints and small black eyes. so far i have not observed him munching on any of my stock. in fact i hardly ever see the little guy, probably about once a month with the flashlight in the middle of the night. it amazes me how/where he can hide for so long.

Fishbone

I had one similar to that tagging along on some rock I just bought. I was worried until my hawk fish killed him. which I had no clue my hawk fish would do that. Anyway I would love to know what it was myself. Good luck on finding out
