I have some green star polyps that i grew onto an oyster shell from the parent rock and now i want to slice them apart. Right now the 2 rocks are attached by the GSPs. Can i use a razor blade in the tank? if i do, it would only be for a few seconds while i slice the 2 rocks apart. I was wondering how much metals get into the water from doing this.

Dont' worry about that at all. I use razor bladees, scissors in my tank all the time to frag corals. Just be careful you don't drop the razor blade in the tank...I've done that and it fell deep into the tank and was a pain to get out.

let me just suggest that you don't reuse the blade. They are cheap enough just to pitch after one use. The short time you use it wont be an issue. However if you reuse it there is a chance that there is rust on it, small enough spots you really don't see, but will leach into the water. They are less than a peeny a piece, just pitch it after you use it

Razor fine. If ultra concerned buy a kent pro scraper that has a stanless steel blade. (No worry of rust, can use to scrape tank)

No need to throw blades away- simply rinse them in tap water, and dry them throroughly after use. Even if they do rust a bit, a few flakes will not cause any severe algae problems.

One item to watch is sometime the single edged razor blades have a coating of oil on them. I do use them in my tank to scrape and sometimes cut coral. I just make sure and clean them before I stick them in the water.

Just a comment about losing razor blades in the tank:
I dropped one into the rocks last year and almost had a heart attack. I used a strong magnet on a stick to extract the blade
