Yellow Colt Coral ??

Are you sure these are DYED? That would make a bit of sense because I bought a yellow one from a reputable dealer (I thought) that did not stay yellow for very long (it turned bright white - which is very nice, too).

Anyway, do you know for a fact that yellow ones do not exist?

If "Colt Coral" refers to Cladiella sp., they only come in shades of brown (to some people's eyes, with purple/pink hues).

I too have seen these "yellow" or "bright pink" colts around lately. I read somewhere about what coralite said. If I can find the site I will post it. I have seen these in a few of my LFS tanks and they don't look too well after a week or so. The LFS was actually selling it as a rare species, which I thought about buying at first, then I found that site.

Some collectors have recently adopted the nasty habit of soft coral dyeing. Colors are usually bright yellow or pink/purple. Occasionally, dyed anemones (blue, red, orange, etc.) are shipped as well.

Dyed corals are not doomed to death, but definitely demonstrate higher mortality rates. One primary causation is the dye interferes with photosynthesis by attenuating light before the zooxanthellae. Avoid dyed corals at all costs, and voice your concern with the LFS.

Is there any way to tell if it is dyed?
I have had my eye on a Bright yellow leather coral that is a little out of my $ range. I havent seen a specimen this Yellow before.

Does anyone know if colt coral can be yellow? I've seen some that are purple/pink in colour and I think they used dye. I want to buy this yellow one but I want to make sure it will stay in this colour.
Also, I want to find out the light requirement for this coral. Does it need more or less light than the usual brown colt coral?

unfortunately, there has been a recent abundance of artificially colored colt corals particularly in yellow and pink. I dont understand why in this well informed and seemingly well connected hobby of ours, unscrupulous practices such as this are proliferating. I personally dont think that colt corals need to be dyed as fully expanded specimens are very attractive and i can only assume that the majority of vendors that carry these colored corals maintain sub-par systems that are not conducive to making corals "happy".

Yellow Leathers (Sarcophyton elegans) are more likely not dyed. The bright yellow coloration is natural.

Can you be more specific on the type of coral? Colt Coral covers a hundred different species. If you can give us the scientific name we will have a better chance of figuring out whether it is dyed or not.
