Another option would be to switch to a natural deodorant made from mineral salts and use natural soaps, like Seventh Generation, so you don't ever have to worry about killing fish in your tank or in the ocean.
Errr....mineral salt deodorants are essentially made of potassium alum. It's freely soluble in water, and in addition to it's deodorant properties, it is used as a water clarifier. It does contain aluminum. I guess the question would then be, do you want to use it as a dual purpose agent? You could both deodorize, and if you lean in far enough, clarify your water at the same time.:scratchch
oh my god you guys are going way over board. dont touch anything? I've never taken a shower before putting my hands in the tank. though sometime if I have hand cream on I will wash my hands with basic dish soap. I 've been doing this for the past 7 years my tank has never had a problem I have not lost an established fish in 4 years and my corals are doing great. sometimes we all go a little over board when basic common sense is all that is needed.
my recommendation is if you just put a fresh swipe of deodorant on and plan on putting your pit in the tank clean it with a rag and some water.
In view of the recent thread where some one died from handling a paly and some one posting in that thread about feeling a a pain in their arm in which he knew it was a reaction to something in his tank while he was cleaning it I would try to wear gloves as much as possible instead of going in bear handed.
