I am in the planning stages for a new reef tank that will replace my 200 (early next year). As it stands right now, I am planning a custom glass tank that will measure 78" long by 32" front-to back, and will be 36" deep.

I am currently using a combination of 250 watt 6500K & VHO actinics over my 200 gallon mostly sps reef tank. My original plan was to go with 3x 400 watt 6500k MH's plus VHO actinincs to light the new tank. However, for a number of reasons, I would like to avoid any supplemental actinic lighting. My assumption is that I will need to go to 1000 watt MH's in order to get bulbs with the right color (10,000K or 20,000K ??), but will still have enough punch to adequately light the tank. Any comments or suggestions? Who sells 1000 watt MH ballasts and lights?

Thanks in advance, Mike

I have no experience with 1000w MH, but I do know where you can get them.

Atlantis Aquatics has them.

They only list 10KK bulbs in the 1000w range, so I don't even think you have the iwasaki/6500K option.

I haven't seen 1000w setups listed on any of the other sites yet. I would suspect that it is only a matter of time

The ballast I went with is from Sunlight Supply You cant beat the warranty and the price. My 1000watt ballast runs alot cooler then CSL 400watt ballast. http://www.sunlightsupply.com
Hope this helps.

After talking to someone at Atlantis Aquatics, I am now considering a different lighting approach:

3x 400watt 6500K Iwasakis running on EYE (mercury vapor) ballasts; and

2x 400watt 20,000K Ushio running on HQI ballasts.

All bulbs will be place perpendicular to front of tank, with the 20,000K bulbs in between the Iwasaki bulbs. Although the 400's may not have the same punch as 1000's, I will get much better light distribution. Any thoughts??

I am closing this thread. The person responsible knows why. M.E. Milz, feel free to open a new thread about your lighting setup.
