big dilemma...i've got a miner leak at hte top of my 70gal tank. It seems to be between the frame and the glass. I can lower the water level but i am afraid by using silicon on the tank will harm the livestock. Is this even possible or must the tank be stripped down no exceptions?

IMO as a housepainter, as long as you use aquarium specific silicone caulking, then once it fully cures your tank won't be harmed.

And with the leak being at the top of the tank, you're chances are good for a patch job. Or at least, if you had to have a leak, then that's your best place for it. small consolation i know.

When i was researching possible solutions for a leaking 180 glass tank, the collective opinion was to totally remove the leaking panel and then reseal the whole thing.

I hope the caulking works for you.
good luck,
po

sometime what can look a lot like a leak near the top frame can actually be capillary wicking.

try dropping the water level in your tank just alittle bit....

I agree with 914. Do you have a powerhead or output pointing towards that area?

If the water level is not the problem then I would temporarily lower your water level to add the silicone. Once it sets up and is slightly firm to touch then you could raise your water level back up. If possible I would wait over night.

Sounds like it should be easy to fix.
