I've never used pH buffer, but baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. What does it say on the buffer?

How's your sump coming, btw?

Sump is doing well. Thanks, I put a piece of plexiglass to divide it from the actual pumps. The skimmer flows over into it causing it to flow over into the sump. Seems to be working well!

Hi Lynn

I used this concoction one time when I had low alk., and it worked for me.

Take a box of baking soda and split it up in two piles, 6 to 1.

Bake the smaller pile in an oven for 30 mins. @450 degrees F(Julia Childs would be proud) I'm not sure how, but this turns the sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate.

Mix the two piles and whamo, you've got alk.

Dose 1 tsp. per day until your alk. is where it needs to be.

Disclaimer:
I would only do this if a few small water changes did not do the trick. Also, I only added 5 tsp. to my system, so I can't say what prolonged, or repeated use of this mixture will do.

Side effects may include:
Head aches
Rickets
Tennis elbow
Hair loss
Impotence
Constipation
Narcolepsy, and
Mad cow disease
