Can anyone recommend a decent RO unit for a reasonable price? No one in my neck of the woods knows diddly about them. In fact, the LFS I deal with doesn't even recommend their use. He claims RO isn't necessary for our local water.
I have been getting by fairly well with regular tap water for about a year now, but I think I'd see even happier corals with RO or RO/DI. Besides, God only knows what's gradually accumulating in there!
I trust what I read on this site over anything I hear locally, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hi.
Your LFS is either too honest or too ignorant. Anyway, do you have Costco around where you live? You can get a RO with drinking water kit for about $150. You can get a bare-bone unit for much cheaper if you look at some of the reef hardware stores.

Thanks for the info! I'm not aware of a Costco around here, but maybe the online shop is the way to go.

I just talked with my local fish guy and he said that the store that he works at loves the Spectrapure units. spectrapure.com
They haven't had any problems with them. I looked them up and they are not the cheapest out there, but lack of headaches is definitely worth something!

I was just checking out the Aquatic Reef Systems website, too. The Triton 3-stage seems pretty reasonable, though I wonder how much it differs from the 3-stage value RO. For the small difference in price, it seems logical to go with the Triton. I'm going to do a little more checking around before making a decision, though. I'll probably look into the Spectrapure site that you mentioned next.

I was checking out the Aquatic reef systems RO/DI units. They look pretty nice. Kent units seem to be sold at most places. Do you know of any major differences between the two? Which one is better?

J, I think you would be real happy with a unit from aquatic reef systems. I just bought a two stage last month from Bryan there and am real happy with it. I plan to soon upgrade it to a 3 stage in a couple of months. Bryan offers real good customer service and will call you at home if you e-mail him, or, at least he did me. His deals are hard to beat, I think. (I believe his two stage unit is a 100 gpd system, but he can verify that).

Spectrapure charges $10 to ship a $4 dollar replacement tube. When they eventually ship it.

I purchased a 5 stage ro/DI from Airwaterice.comfor 139.00 on Monday. I should have gotten it today, but something is screwy with UPS. It seems good as they use Filmtec membranes from Dow, but the DI seems smaller than other units (2.5 x 11 inches). I'll probably purchase ome bulk DI and replace when needed.

i have a kent maxima 35 (not sure if available in usa dn quite expensive), it has 3 sections below with the filters which are clear so when the filters are beggining to become exhausted you can tell by the colour of them, really handy imo
