My girlfriend won a trip to the Bahamas today!

We will be going the first part of June. I plan on doing some diving while Im there and I was wondering if anyone has any experience in those waters. Where can I find "underwater" laws for those parts. Im not sure but Im guessing theyre protected waters. If possible I want to bring back a couple pieces of LR.

Any other helpful advice for this trip is welcomed.

Thanks,
Nate

P.S. Will be bringing back dive pics to show off.

I found a Bahama site with fishing laws.

It states: It is illegal to export live rock or small reef fish for commercial purposes.

Does this mean I cant grab some for private collection?

Hey thanks. I found this on that page: While it's illegal to use scuba equipment to catch any fish or other marine life, snorkels and compressor rigs are permitted.

I still need to find out if I can bring it back home though.

Hi.

I do most of my coral research in the Bahamas. While I am unaware of the particulars of the laws, I do know that most everything is protected by Bahamian law, and CITES prevents bringing a lot of stuff into the country too. Furthermore, the Customs people won't let you into the country with any live marine animals as far as I know.

We have a hard enough time trying to bring back water samples, and in 10 years, we've been given permits to bring back skeletons for work.

My suggesstion is avoid collecting anything and have a fun and safe trip exploring and enjoying a natural setting. Make sure you take pictures, they last much longer than most living animals you could catch anyway.

Cheers,
Brian

That strict huh? Dang. Im hoping to be able to bring back a couple small pieces of LR. To try increasing bio diversity, and more importantly, to have something in my reef that will always remind me of the trip. As for fish, invert, or coral, it can stay there. I dont want to try my chances of getting any type of complex organism to stay alive through the trip.

Where in the Bahamas will you be staying? I was there about 5 years ago and stayed on Paradise Island, right next door to the Atlantis. The Atlantis is a beautiful place. Gorgeous.

I spent the night there for free when American Eagle bumped me from my flight to Exuma. They took us halfway and put us up there until we could catch a connector the next night. It was sweet!

But, I'd much prefer an isolated stretch of beach to one filled with drunken idiots and gambling 17 year olds.
