All the LFS' in town got their first shipment in two weeks today. I have been very good at monitoring my water, but do not beleive I will get any spike in ammonia because out of 20 Lbs. of LR in my 10 gallon, 7 of it is from an established tank. 5 of 6 Astreas I bought are doing well (one got caught in a powerhead), as well as my Blue-Legged Hermits, in fact I am trying hard to grow more algae for them to eat.

I want to buy a fish. I think Firefish are adorable, but there are some low-flow areas on my DSB that seem to collect a bit of detritus.

Would a small Scooter or Bicolor Blenny be a better idea? Will a fish like this help stir up the DSB? What about a Yellow-Headed Jawfish?

Am I moving too fast (tank set up on the 16th of Dec.) or am I correct in beleiving this tank won't cycle without a waste-producer?

Any help would be appreciated, you guys are too good to me!

A firefish would be a great "first addition", and although timid, once comfortable will spend a fair amount of time out in the open. I'd stay away from the jawfish unless you have at least a 4 inch dsb. A ten gallon, being so shallow, might not give the jaw a sense of security, and they are known to spook easily and jump until well settled. Have you considered a purple firefish? A bit more costly but very attractive and hardy. You really have lots of options. Good luck with your tank. JWT

Thank you, actually the fish i had my eye on was a Purple Firefish.

So esmithiii, no comments? You've been the most helpful in the past. Am I moving too fast?

You know, it's very funny how people pay more attention to Kirtis, who moves too fast and kills things, than me, who is trying to do the right thing and get good advice. Seems on message boards people enjoy controversy more than discussion. Ban Kirtis.

Don't say anything bad about kirtis, you will just get a nasty message from his apparent supporters.

As for you question. A bicolor blenny is a wonderful fish, as is the firefish. Both would be great starter fish. If you go with the bicolor, be sure to have plenty of small holes for him to back in to.

Since this is a 10 gallon tank, I would assume you are not planning on having many fish. One fish that would really be an eye catcher is the Orchid Dottyback. They are a bit aggressive though.

Good luck with your tank

Also, you should do a search on Scooters. They're akin to mandarins in their dietary needs and often will starve in captivity, especially in a new/small tank.
