If you use the bulb (or even if you don't), would you like to see it in a larger wattage? I ask for the following reason: presently, Iwasaki only makes this bulb in the 150 watt version. While they have contemplated making it in larger wattages, they have sort of put a hold on the project. If you want larger verions, please email Iwasaki at
http://www.eye.co.jp/, in the company contact section. Then, please send a carbon copy to
coralreefecosystems.com
([email protected]). He (Steve) is the one spearheading the initiative to get this bulb in larger sizes. However, it is looking as though
Iwasaki does not think that there will be demand for this bulb. If you have seen this bulb in action, you know this is not true! Please take the initiative to do this if you want to see this bulb in larger versions. Thanks!

what is 50,000K? Ultra, ultra blue? Isn't 20,000k and above somewhat useless?

Is the 50,000k a true color rating or just meaningless like coralife's old 10k lamps? Seems like it would be an actinic halide, but if it's awesome then i'd definitely like to see it in larger wattages.

Do you have a link to a tank running the 150's?

This is not a real K rating but the name of the bulb.

Whoops, that's what i get for reading quickly! Here's a tank from the above link running the 150w 50,000k lamps:

150waqua_lg.jpg

Name makes no sense but looks like a nice color lamp, I'd like to see some lumen info compared to iwasaki's awesome 6500k lamps, probably much less.

Output Analysis: 150W 50000K Iwasaki Aqua Lamp & 150W 6500K Iwasaki ColorArc Lamp

LAMP MAX PAR MAX UVA MAX UVB %BLUE %GREEN %RED
50000K 1040 185 12 48% 22% 30%
6500K 1865 146 8 27% 33% 40%

When we calculate the amount of "Blue PAR," the lamps produce almost the same amounts:
545 µMOLS for the 6500K vs. 584 µMOLS for the 50000K.

Sounds like the good info to me. And that picture shows GREAT coloration.

hi.
Anybody know the "color temperature" of the bulb used in UV lamp? 40,000K or something?

The 50,000k bulb is actually a beautiful blue-white color, bluer than a regular 10k but not too blue. This is not a real K rating but the name of the bulb.

The bulb is in fact not nearly as blue as the 20K, or the 12K. It is sort of an interesting color that you must see in person.

Output wise, the bulb is very strong in relationship to how blue it is. My girlfriend runs one on a 29 gallon, and SPS have been coloring up pretty well, even on the bottom (and growing well).

The owner of coralreefecosystems has been running the bulb for at least 6 months (maybe closer to a year) and has noticed no real sprectrum shift of the bulb (like the Radium).

samurai9 ,

The Radium is so "special" because it seems to be good at coloring up corals. It is usually run on an HQI ballast, to increase its output, although in actuality, it's output is not so much less than a 10k. The problem with radiums (and other20ks) is that they shift spectrum at about the six month mark. They are also pretty expensive. It is not a bad bulb, but it would be nice if a bulb could be made that has good color, decent output, and is not so expensive (hopefully the 50k). I have found that the Iwasaki 6500k is good at showing brilliant purples, but fails miserably to show greens. The 20k shows all colors pretty well.

Has anyone emailed Iwasaki?

Mail them , it will give us another bulb to try and if the Iwaski can have the same look as 10-20k with maybe longer life and cheaper cost??? Even if it cost the same as 10k and has good looks its another choice of a quality bulb= usually IW. better than alot of 10k bulbs that aren't made very well.IMO

Thank you to all who have sent emails to Iwasaki.
We have gotten a good start, but we need to do more. Steve will be talking with Iwasaki later this week, so please send in your emails now. The number of emails Iwasaki gets will determine rather or not this bulb goes into production in larger wattages. So keep the emails coming!

This is an opportunity for the hobbyist to influence the products that we will be using, so please take advantage of it.

Would this bulb need supplementation? Does it need an HQI ballast?

I currently have 3 - 400w PFO standard ballasts running 6500k Iwasaki's. I'm seriously thinking about buying new HQI ballasts and running 20k Radium bulbs. I don't want to run 03 bulbs because of the extra energy cost. I also don't want to change bulbs every 6 months like many Radium users claim they have to.
