You might want to try the Stockman Standpipe it is a version of the Durso Standpipe that should fit in your overflow. I originally had Bio Balls in mine, but I did not want the Nitrate trap as well, plus it was still loud, mine is now VERY quiet. Here is mine:

I used the stockman modification on my 75g tank as well. It has worked well, I just had to drill a couple more holes in the top than what he had in the instructions. Sometimes if I mess around with the tank to much it starts fluctuating (i.e. it will gurgle intermitently for a minute or two), and the water level in the overflow will go up and down about a half inch, but it always comes back to normal pretty quickly.

Kaliman, why didn't you raise your stand pipe another inch or two, wouldn't this have eliminated even more of the waterfall?

I'm building a 38 AGA with a 20 gallon sump. It sounds like a rain gutter in a monsoon here. I have a 3.5"x3.5" center overflow with a Mag 5 hooked up to a tee. Any ideas on quieting this thing down? Maybe Bio-Balls? I do not want my overflow to turn into a nitrate laden prefilter. If I cannot quiet it down, my wife will make sure my reefkeeping hobby stops at 100 gallons, and stays in an office.

A very important fact....the spouse must enjoy the reef. If the spouse does not enjoy the reef due to noise, algae, etc....the reef will always be small and in the garage/office, you know, out of the way.

By the way I am very proud of my self. No leaks and good turnover. I like my LFS I trust them...to a certain degree. They are not money grubbing hogs, they want me to be happy.

The top of the standpipe is much higher than it looks in the picture, all I would have to do is drill the hole bigger and I could have no waterfall at all. I like the way it is, it is almost silent and I get some aeration this way.

As for placing baffles in the overflow, I guess that would work, you will have to try. I would just get a new Bulkhead and start over, one with a slip on the other side, and place an elbow in the overflow.

Well, I think maybe I screwed up then. I cemented my PVC into the bulkhead (tank is drilled on the back, not the bottom. So I can't screw in a standpipe. Is there any reason I could not strategically place a few baffles in the overflow?
