what are you looking for int he sump?? i mean the overall purpose .. do you want an ecosystem set-up. do you want a refugium do you want to house a skimmer uv steralizer ect. If you just want a sump buy an extra tank maybe a 20L or 20H depends on your stand requirments. you might have to custom build also yopu could go the wet dry method. I dont mean any disrespect but these are the comments you may get if you provide alittle more info on what you are keeping currently and what you want to keep in the future and the type of sump you would like to get i would be more thna wiiling to help. I just upgraded to an ecosytme type and let me just say a loot less work and more corals are deffinatley benifitting.......

You want to buy one? Why not make your own? I've got a 75g with a 20 gallon sump. It's half sump, half refugium.

Try these links:

I blieve mine was originally based on ozreef's (very good website, btw) but it's not that fancy schmancy.

Ozreef's sump

This is a good refugium site.

Darren's refugium page

Try emailing Andy too. He used to do custom jobs. Everyone always thought his prices were very reasonable and good work. Tell him tangirl sent you.

Cyberpanther: Thanks for starting this discussion. I am also in the process of studying what type of sump to add. I understand the purpose of the sump and refugium but don't have the plumbing expertise to build my own at the present, so I am doing a lot (at least some) research. Perhaps others will contribute (as Tan Girl did) how they built their own and the technicalities of making the water go from "A" to "B" and/or have recommendations where to find good plans.

This is the sump mine's based on. I only have 2 chambers instead of 4. I skipped the bioballs chamber, added a spray bar and divided the 20g tank the long way instead of the short way.

My plumbing is based on Inland Reef's DIY guide only kinda backwards.

I know this is long and I tried to overly simplify it, but I felt I had to in order to describe it with out a pic.

What I did was take plexiglass and cut it to fit the length of a 20g. It's also 2-3 inches shorter than the top of the tank. On the right side I cut a little notch in the top of what is to be the plexiglass wall - about 1 inch deep by 4 inches long. This is will the water will flow from the refugium half into the sump half. I fastened it into the 20g tank - making the refugium the front half and the sump the back half so I could see the refugium - neat stuff!

For the plumbing, I don't have a predrilled tank (I definitely will nest time - what a hassle!) so I have an overflow bow on the back of my main tank. I cut 1 inch (I believe - it's been a while and it's downstairs

) pvc to go from the bottom of the overflow to the top of the refugium. I put an elbow on that and attached a straight length of pvc, only a couple inches long to go into a T fitting. The bottom part of the T fitting (what would be the vertical part if you were holdin it like a T) is connected to a hose and drains into the sump.

I put another short length of PVC on the other end of the T and put a ball valve on that. Then another short length, an elbow and a then a spray bar - drilled PVC - 1/8th inch holes I believe. The spray bar is what gets water to the refugium.

The ball valve is open all the way, but I like it there so I can turn the refugium off to get a good look down into it or in case I had to do anything to it for any reason.

I control the amount of water going into the sump versus the refugium by angling the T valve and hose.

Oh and the lighting for my refugium is just the light strip of the hood that comes with the 20 gallon hoods. It sits in front of the refugium right up against the front wall. They seem to be happy with it.

Tan, that was an excellent description of your refugium but a picture sure would help to clear things up. Is your camera broken already

I purchased a 20 gallon used tank from my LFS. $10. drilled two holes for in and out, sand bed, macros, light voila -- instant refugium. The LFS stores around Houston have old tanks piled up around the back of the stores. Never hurts to ask
