SeaSydney;

I can't say they look "whiter" since I have not seen the older bulbs. The new ones come in a package that with a "R" on them (a resistor inside I think is also an indication). I don't have too much of a problem with the yellowish tint; but when I added the actinics it looks much better.

If you look at the bulb prices they don't differ too much from 250/400w... so I figured why not spend the extra $$ so you won't have to upgrade again

BTW: I bought the PFO ballast and mounted it on a DYI canopy; you can save quite a bit that way. If Costs are a concern and you don't mind DYI's take take a look at this. (I haven't found a need to try it; but it looks do-able)

I have noticed that with a lot of bulbs there are a number of factors that can determine what the color looks like:

-Variations in bulbs
-Different Ballasts
-Any yellowing in the water or algea on the rocks can dramatically effect this
-Different supplemental lighting may or may not go well and make the color look different

I've had my Blue Maxima under the middle one of
3 / 150 watt 10000k MH (currently on 6 hours a day only) for nearly 18 months now, in my 6x2x2.
And hes looking good and has grown also.
He also sits on my substrate (bottom) of tank, no DSB either.
I think you can all get a bit carried away with light. Expensive to run too.
Some of the best reefs and colours i've seen here in Oz, only use floros, power glows etc.

Like Sue T. I keep my clams in my 180 under 3 x 250, 6,500K w/ 2 x 140watt actinic suppliments. When I first received my Black Tiger is was on the browish color but now is a deep Black w/ gold.

My holding tank is 17" deep with eggcrate and I have 2 x 150HQI and all clams do very well.
