Check out this Bright Blue Carpet Anemone

We received it on Monday, it is about 7 inches across and absolutely beautiful. Any care info or other experiences would be helpful. I know this is a natural color, not a dye. What I don't know is the care required, is it the same as other carpets or does the blue color mean it needs more/less light than similar species of non-blue color? It's under 400 watt 10K halide. We also received a metallic green one, it is as brilliant as green star polyps. Thanks for sharing any info you may have on these. Shameless Plug >> They're also for sale!

Never had a carpet anemone, so I can't speak directly on its care... But being that it's blue, it's zooxanthellae must use red PAR extensively, which means it must've come from a very shallow environment, and therefore needs pretty intensive light. Either that, or it subsists off mostly meaty foods and derives little energy from photosynthesis... I dunno!

Cool anemone, but if you don't know a lot about carpets, don't get one. They are very aggressive as far as their nematocysts are concerned, and can sting other anemones. Most anemenones will be okay next to each other, but not a carpet. And if you've ever tried to get one off of your finger, it's like trying to remove a glue trap. Anything that touches it gets stuck, and you get more and more stuck as you try and free yourself.

By the way, you might want to watch it carefully, as it's "mouth" seems to be gaping a little, and if it remains like that or continues to gape more and more, it's not doing well, and you could lose it at any time.

FWIW, I also have a baby blue/teal carpet anemone. It is without question my favorite animal in my SPS tank, even more so than the red/pink variant of E. quadricolor, or any Acro I have. I've had mine awhile, and it hasn't faded in color, and has in fact intensifed under the 400W Iwasakis. It's my understanding that it needs a lot of bright, full spectrum light, as they're collected from *very* shallow water (5' or less from what I've read). I feed it frequently with silversides and whatever flake food happens upon it. One thing to look for is if it *roots* quickly. IME, that's a good indicator if it's healthy. Other signs to look for are the gaping mouth and flaccid, droopy tentacles...generally bad signs. Mine also likes good water flow, enough to *sweep* the tentacles. Feed it regularly, make sure it's getting loads of good light, and give it some good flow, and you should be ok. Also, to keep it pinned down to a particular spot, one trick I used was to feed it heavily when it settled onto the spot I wanted it to. Worked like a charm. HTH

I used to have one, S. Haddoni, seemingly coming out of Pakistan/Indian Ocean.
There are a lot of dyed ones around, only the tentacles should be blue, the foot should be reddish.
The easier sp, of carpet to keep...had to get rid of mine as it grew fast and took over the tank. Great anemone to keep some commensal shrimp/crabs with.

I am going to be buying a blue or green carpet anenome soon as well (as soon as i do all the research) how DO you differentiate from the dyed ones and the real ones? is there any definate way? thanks.

Your comment is not constructive to this thread. We are responsibly gathering as many opinions, information, and others experiences with this anemone as we can. The point of this site is to share knowledge and experiences so that others may benefit. Of course we know how to care for carpet anemones, however, we were sent an extremely rare color morph of which we have had little experience. Therefore, we are not afraid to ask for others opinions and experiences with this anemone. We are concerned more with the care of our livestock than our own egos. We feel that sharing knowledge is what makes a LFS successful.
Everyone else-- Thanks for the input -- The anemones have acclimated and are doing great. We will feed them tomorrow for the first time; will keep you posted on their condition.

a fish store here in the Seattle area just got about 10 of each the blue and green...

They are selling them for $50green...$60blue.
They didn't looked to good when they first put them in but I am going to check back next week.

My first thought was that these things were dyed but I am not really sure how to tell.

$60 for a blue? It's dyed. The wholesalers charge more then that for a real blue.

Yeah, you really can't blame a LFS for bringing stuff in that they "don't know how to care for", most of the time we get dendronepthya and goniopora when we don't order them. When you see blue carpet anemone on a stock list you don't expect something as cool as this, you expect a standard issue carpet w/ somewhat of a blue hue. You really can't fault him on that. Or maybe he should just throw it under a nice 15w grow lamp? How i she going to know w/out asking? Since you are in the business then one would think you'd have a clue about what happens when you order stuff. Tsk tsk tsk.

I think I might head out there today. I'll check them out, maybe I'll take a picture.

The tank is coming along nicely. So far the only coral I've added is a frag of GSP like the one Dusty gave you. Its looking good though.

I caught a 2" mantis last night in the tank, so I'm pretty stoked about that. He's chillin in the sump right now but I'm going to get him a nicer home.

Well, I didn't get to see those anemones. They had a power outage at Blue Sierra and all hell broke loose. One of their saltwater sumps broke and they had major leakage everywhere. I wouldn't recommend going out there anytime this weekend.

The price is a little low compared to the green ones. Which,in turn,makes me leary about it's true color.

However,I would put down a deposit and make the purchass after 2-3 weeks in the dealers tank. This is also assuming you have the proper home and experience to house a carpet anemone.
