I am suspecting the culprit not to be "who" but "what" as in "what" is your water parameter specifically Ph, Hardness, Nitrite and Nitrate?

It is not uncommon for startfishes to loose legs and rot when the environmental stress is becoming to much for them to handle. Your crabs may just be picking off the dead tissue, not necessarily the killer.

Thanks for your input but I have tested my water regularly every two weeks. And I've done my testing 3 days prior to this incodent. I'm thinking more towards the hermit crab which I have wittnessed first hand attack the tang I had in the first stages of it's demise.

Hey Guys,
I would like someone to shed some light on my serious situation. I have had my salt Tank set up for 6 months or better now. I have been through the ammonia spike 2X and dozens of ailing dieing fish, yep! I is greenhorn to the reef aquarium.
I have in my tank 1 choco-chip star, about 20lbs live rock with UFO's and a hermit crab.
This morning I turned on the lights as usual same time first actinics then the brite whites to descovery my CC star fish is missing 2/3 one leg and the other is mutilated. He still clings to the glass for how long I don't know. The two suspicious characters are the hermit and this other shell-less crab that hides in the live rock. This one gives me the creeps he has no shell, his claws look like worms with beaks and his legs that of a spider and striped. Oh! I discovered a milipede looking dude, seemed quite harmless.
WHO COULD HAVE COMMITTED THIS HAINESS CRIME AND WILL PATRICK (STAR FISH) WILL LIVE. HELPPPPP!!!!!
