I have seen posts that suggest scallops are not a great idea for small tanks. I was at the LFS the other day, transfixed, no, mesmerized by the Flame Scallops with the blue lightning flashing across their mantles. Any pros/cons to these guys?
I too was impressed and ended up buying one awhile back. Mine is doing great and seems to be happy. I would agree that the usual problem is that they starve. For myself I do not skim, have a refugium and suppliment with spray dried phytoplankton. As of tonight I have started a culture of live phytoplankton to keep my tank well fed and see if there is a noticable diference in the corals health. If you buy one remember that they are filter feeders who need alot of food.
Also note that these scallops do NOT like to be seen. They like to hide a lot. So when it moves to the back of a nice dark spot, leave them there, don't force them to be somewhere out in the open all the time, this only stresses them out more. And they will move again anyway.
And as stated above, they have a high nutrient requirement.
