I just bought a MagDrive 9.5 and it makes to much noise! I've been using a Cap 2200 in sump return. Now I am getting ready to change out my sump with a new Lifereef LF1-125.

. I set it up in the garage, with the return just feeding back into the sump, to water test it. And bam. It's nosiy as hell!

. I don't want this thing in my leaving room!

So it looks like I won't be setting up my new sump this weekend. Dang it.

The noise sounded like friction combined with a little air. Or something like that.

Who makes the quietest external pump???

DJ88- I have read the Dolphin Ampmaster 3000 is quite and a really good pump. But that is way too much flow for my 75G.

Louey,

I will be running mine on a 45.

My returns are all 1.5" and I am also running my bullet skimmer off of it as well. One pump to do it all.

The two quietest pumps are the Lifegard Quiet One Pump and the discontinued Dolphin SS pumps (along with the still available Velocity versions). Unfortunately, the SS models have longevity issues, and both pumps are fanless which means more heat added to the water.

The Ampmaster, is not quite as silent as the models above but it is awfully close and is rapidly gaining a very large following.

After that, the noise level rises as you're left with predominantly fan cooled external pumps.

Pretty much re-iterate what's been said. AmpMaster only makes a quite hum and that is about it. QuitOne pump is hard to tell if it's running it's so quite. Iwaki's are quite, but not as much as the ones above.

Also, remember that anything is probably going to sound loud at first... water moving, etc. but you will quickly get used to it is what I find

I would personally probably go with the Quiet One for your tank.

The CSL Velocity Titanium series of pumps are hands down the most quiet pump on the market. You'll have to touch it to make sure it's running. It will add a little heat to your tank, on my 58 about 1*. I could work with the heat but not the noise.
FWIW - I put a mak4 on just to try it out and it lasted about 5 min. Man was it loud.

It's done. I ordered a Quiet One from Marine Depot today. It should work well. I had them fed-ex it to me for tomorrow deliver, so I can still set up my new LifeReef sump this weekend!

I guess I should have posted this question before I purchased the MagDrive, but It will be a good backup in case the Quite One ever fails, which is - of course - inevitable.

Thanks for all the replies.
